St.John’s, Keswick

Those who braved the heavy showers last Thursday to attend the concert at St.John’s Church were given a real treat in reward for their efforts. The folk singer Elaine Davidson , with the talented young instrumentalist Danny Hart, gave a spell binding performance. Elaine hails from Wigton and many of her own compositions reflected the landscape, people and history of the area including Ullswater, Galloway, Silloth and St.Bega. There was even a song promoting Fair Trade, written for a festival in Silloth. The mood ranged from reflective to very lively, especially in a drinking song accompanied by two guitars, and "In honour of the Fox" which Danny accompanied on the Mandolin. The song "Inside" gives the title to her CD and she is soon to issue a new CD entitled "The moon and the tide". Traditional songs included "Wild mountain thyme" and "Amazing Grace". Hearing such singing and the haunting violin accompaniment in St.John’s glorious acoustic was a revelatory experience and the event was over all too soon.

Elaine works musical magic with Danny

At once Elaine Davidson catches the heart and soul of her audience with a gentle smile and the sheer poetry of her lyrics and guitar playing. Apart from the first song,CORBY CASTLE the songs were written by Elaine.

At Ireby Fair she came across Danny Hart and his violin, Danny is 17 and studying at Newton Rigg. They teamed up for this occasion with Danny playing violin and mandolin - a joy to listen to, blending with guitar and voice.

TURNING THE TIDE and REVOLUTION SONG brought deep disturbing feelings of the world we inhabit. It seemed each place she visited and each moment she shared became a song, a poem, especially for us - even THE FOXES of CUMBERLAND wild and free as HARVEST MOON.

Danny's plaintive pure notes corralled the LADY of the LAKE. Elaine gifts her sweet charm to those with learning difficulties she works with and wrote WRITTEN in STARS especially for them.

Blues got a look in with DONT WANNA KNOW and MAGIC & MOONSHINE, as amusing as it was musical and I was lost in the melody of CALLING on LOVE. Another outstanding concert from the Monkey Tree a great asset to the Wigton scene.
